Donations

YOUR DONATIONS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED, ALWAYS APPRECIATED AND MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF YOUR NEIGHBORS AND HELP TO SUPPORT OUR MANY PROGRAMS!

Donations:

It’s easy. You donate items that you no longer need and your neighbors can pick them up at no cost. Donations of new and gently used clothing/shoes, toys, household goods, books and other miscellaneous items are accepted throughout normal business hours (Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm). No appointment is necessary to bring items in when the office is open. Arrangements can be made to accept donations during the evening and on weekends by calling 860-628-3761.

We will gladly give you a receipt for your donations. If you would like a receipt, you must either have a list of the items to give us or leave us your name and mailing address. We will inventory the items and send the donation receipt to you within a week. Additional information regarding your donations is available on several websites. Here is one that has a video that explains the process.

Kristen’s Kloset:

Kristen’s Kloset is the closet located to the right as soon as you enter our building. Kristen Warner, a Southington resident, died tragically at age thirteen. Kristen would have graduated from Southington High School in 2008. The closet was dedicated to her memory. Items are placed in Kristen’s Kloset for Southington residents to take as needed. The closet is filled with new and gently used clothing, household and other items donated by the public.

If a resident has a need and can’t find it in Kristen’s Kloset we record the name and item needed in a book at the front desk. As new donations come in, if the item/items are found, they are put aside. The resident is called and given two weeks to claim the item. If not picked up within two weeks, the item is put back into Kristen’s Kloset.

Clothing/Shoes:

New and gently used men’s, women’s, children’s and infant’s clothing and shoes are accepted. New clothing and shoes may be used for the following: fire victims, job interviews, work clothes, school clothes, gifts and Unique Boutique. Gently used clothing is placed in Kristen’s Kloset for residents to take. When donations come in, volunteers check to see if someone has requested a size or item that we did not have. If we receive that item, we call the person and give them two weeks to come in and pick up their item(s).

Toys:

New toys and gently used toys, stuffed animals, board games, puzzles, dolls, action figures and sports items are always welcome. New toys are used for the holiday programs and gently used toys are placed in “Kristen’s Kloset” for residents to take.

Books:

New books and gently used books are always needed. New books are also used for our holiday programs and gently used books are place in “Kristen Kloset” for residents to take home and enjoy.

Household Goods:

Household goods are always needed. Examples of items most often requested are: bowls, pots & pans, dishes, glasses, silverware, blankets, comforters, bath and kitchen towels, home décor, art and frames and candles. Some small appliances are also needed, such as blenders, toasters, coffee makers, mixers and small microwaves. When any household items are donated, we check to see if we have someone on our list that is looking for that particular item. If no one has requested that item, it is placed in “Kristen’s Kloset”.

Miscellaneous Items:

Miscellaneous items such as jewelry, cosmetics, personal hygiene products, CDs, DVDs, and unused gifts are always needed. Unused gifts are used for the holiday programs. Some of these items are used at the children’s shopping party. Each year, we host a children’s shopping party where children can pick out gifts for their parents or guardians for Christmas at no charge. The gifts are wrapped and tagged before the children are reunited with their parents.

Furniture:

This unique service is a way to recycle furniture. Donors call with furniture they no longer need or want and we look to see if any of our clients/consumers have a need for that piece of furniture. This could be because of an addition to their family, a new apartment/home, a separation/divorce, fire or exiting an abusive situation. Furniture donations are accepted only when a client/consumer has requested a particular item and the donor has that item to donate. Arrangements can be made calling our office at 860-628-3761.
New, Antiques and Other Raffle Items: We host a yearly fund raiser called Unique Boutique that raises money through the Salvation Army. These funds enable our office to purchase food for our food pantry. We are always looking for items to sell and for the silent and live auctions.

Financial Donations:

Financial donations are gratefully accepted and 100% of your money goes for client use. Monetary donations are used to purchase food, assist with holiday programs, to help clients with rent, electric/gas shutoff and other emergency situations. Checks can be made payable to either: Southington Community Services or Southington Salvation Army.

Remember, if you no longer have use for an item, it just might be needed by a family in our town. It’s a good way to recycle and help your neighbor at the same time. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOUTHINGTON - JUST BY GIVING A HELPING HAND.
