The staff of the Engineering Department provides broad technical assistance to the boards and commissions of the Town, other Town Departments, and the Town citizens at large. We provide direct engineering expertise and supervision of Town roads, storm drainage system, sidewalks, and sanitary sewers. The staff also provides engineering overview and expertise for the land use boards, this includes Conservation Commission, Planning and Zoning, and Zoning Board of Appeals. We provide engineering oversight and inspection for all construction projects within the Town. The Department supervises Section 17 of the Town Code of Ordinances which involves permits for excavations, driveway permits, sidewalk inspection and replacement program, Call Before You Dig markouts and inspections, as well as receive and investigate and coordinate complaints regarding roads, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, storm drainage, surface drainage, stopping sight distance, tree removal, and other miscellaneous items. The Department also oversees Section 11-16.6 of the Zoning Regulations regarding filling or removal from a site of no more than 400 cubic yards of material. In addition, the Engineering Department is the Administrator for the Refuse Enterprise Fund. Projects undertaken by the Engineering Department during the fiscal year 7/1/05 to 6/30/06 include, but are not limited to, repairs to Atwater Street Bridge and Prospect Street Bridge, construction of the Highway Department Operations Complex on Old Turnpike Road, completion of Captain Lewis Drive, commencement of replacement of East Street culvert near Undermountain Crossing, reconstruction of Laning Street from Pleasant Street to Flanders Road, construction of sanitary sewers on a portion of West Street, and reconstruction of the DeFashion Street culvert.
