The Southington Health Department Weather Station
Established January 17, 2007

Located on the roof of the Town Hall Annex, 93 Main Street, Southington, Ct 06489
Location: 41 degrees 36.035 minutes North Latitude
72 degrees 52.684 minutes West Longitude
Elevation: 196 ft (Mean Sea Level)
The Station consists of a Davis Instruments Vantage Pro 2 with integrated sensors for temperature, humidity, rainfall. The rainfall instrument reads as little as 0.01 inches of precipitation, and has a heater which melts snowfall to measure it as inches of precipitation ("rainfall"). The temperature sensor includes a fan which keeps ambient-temperature air flowing past the thermal sensor at all times. Measurements are sent by radio to the recording equipment in the Health Department on a constant basis (continually). Wind direction is measured by a windvane, and windspeed by a windcup assembly. The wind equipment is mounted about four and a half feet above the integrated sensors. An additional sensor, a "Leaf Wetness Sensor" is used as a "proxy" or alternate method of detecting wet roadway conditions. All rooftop equipment is solar powered with the exception of the rainfall heater. Additional information on weather instruments, including the station used by Southington Health Department, may be found at the Davis Website, http://www.davisnet.com/weather/index.asp. The Southington Health Department Weather Station routinely sends weather information to the Citizens Weather Observers Program (CWOP) which shares the data with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Our CWOP Station ID is: CW7403.
