SOUTHINGTON PARKS & RECREATION
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Q. What is the distance of the "Rails to Trails" path?
A. 4.1 miles (one way)
Q. How does one use the town swimming pools?
A. Pools are for town residents only - proof of residency required. Residents may bring one out of town guest.
Q. When are the town pools open?
A. Pool openings are dependent upon weather and budget concerns. Check the Pool Hours page for the current hours of operation.
Q. Are dogs allowed at events held downtown, such as Music On The Green and the Apple Harvest Festival?
A. Dogs (and any other animals) are NOT allowed at special events per an ordinance passed by the Town Council on 2/14/2005 (Sec. 12-91). Any person or parent or guardian of an underage person who violates this chapter shall be fined twenty-five dollars ($25.00). Dogs used by the sight-impaired are allowed. Dogs are also not allowed on playing fields during an event.
Q. The weather has taken a turn for the worse. How do I find out if an event or game has been cancelled or postponed?
A. Cancellation information will be posted on the town website and on the Parks & Recreation Dept.'s Facebook page. You may also contact the Parks & Recreation office at 860-276-6219.
Q. Is hunting allowed at Crescent Lake?
A. Yes. Bowhunting ONLY (no firearms allowed at any time) is allowed seasonally at Crescent Lake (dates determined by the State DEP). This is open to Southington residents/taxpayers ONLY, and weekly permits must be obtained from the Parks & Recreation Department. Permits are free of charge. A current bowhunting license and proof of residency (driver's license; non-resident taxpayers must present a copy of a tax bill) are required to obtain permits.
Q. Can I reserve one of the picnic areas/pavilions for a private event in one of the parks?
A. Yes; however, a permit is required and reservations are restricted to Southington residents ONLY (out-of-towners may attend your event, but there must be an equal or greater number of Southington residents in attendance; the permit application must be completed by a Southington resident). Visit our Forms page to download the permit application. It is advised that you call the Parks & Recreation office at 860-276-6219 ahead of time to check availability.
Q. Has the Southington Drive-In Theater reopened?
A. Thanks to local organizations, civic groups and generous volunteers, movies have indeed returned to the Southington Drive-In site! Movies are shown on Saturday evenings (rain date - Sundays) during the summer, typically beginning in June and running through Labor Day weekend. Please visit www.southingtondrive-in.org for more information.
Q. Do all of your bus trips leave from Southington?
A. Unfortunately, no. Trip departure location depends on the number of individuals who have signed up through the Parks & Recreation Department. If we have at least 15 people registered, the bus will depart from the Commuter Lot in Plantsville on Route 10 across from Slider's. If we have less than 15, trips will depart from the Bee Street Commuter Lot in Meriden (click for directions).
Q. How can I advertise my event on the Town Green sign board?
A. Sign space is available for a 2-week period maximum (signs go in on Sundays & come out on Saturdays, subject to availability) for non-profit community events ONLY. There are only 4 spaces available per week, so it is advised that you call the Parks & Recreation office to reserve a slot as far in advance of your event as possible. An application must be submitted in order to complete your reservation. Stop into our office or visit our Forms page to download the application.
