The Federal Government is placing a major emphasis on grease removal, as they have determined that fats, oils and grease (FOG) cause a large majority of raw sewage overflows from sanitary sewers into our watercourses. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) is holding municipalities responsible for any overflows caused by grease.

Applications to install an external/internal grease interceptor (or oil/water/sediment separator) are available at the Sewer Office located at the Municipal Center (lower level), 196 North Main Street, Southington.

REQUIREMENTS:
External grease interceptors must be a minimum of 1,000 gallons. 

All external grease interceptor installations must be pre-approved by the Town Engineer for size and configuration before installation.

Installation must also be inspected by the Town Engineer while under construction.

Final approval to discharge to sanitary sewer is made by Water Pollution Control.

Any future change in grease production may require installation of a larger interceptor.

Documentation of grease interceptor cleaning shall be kept and will be inspected by the Health and Water Pollution Control departments to insure proper
maintenance.

Any use of an internal grease interceptor will be at the discretion of the Town Engineer.
