Trade Name Certificates

The filing of a Trade Name Certificate is required by the Connecticut General Statutes Section 35-1. The purpose of the certificate is to identify persons doing business in Southington under a fictitious name. The penalty for failure to file a trade name certificate is $500.

All people who are authorized to sign on behalf of the business must sign their name on the Trade Name Certificate.

Trade Names for Corporations and LLCs

Corporations and Limited Liability Companies can also function under trade names, but if they're doing business under the name registered with our office they don't need to file a trade name with the town clerk.

For example, if you are "Green Landscaping LLC" you don’t need to register a trade name if you’re conducting business as "Green Landscaping LLC". But if you wish to do business under a different name, then you will have to file a trade name with the town clerk.

The fee to file the certificate with the Town Clerk is $10.00. Complete the certificate below and send the notarized form with payment to:
